My greater project looks at the combination of historic industries of South Australia and memorialisation of death in the form of a cemetery cross crematorium. The site which I am focusing on is the Kanmantoo Copper mine on the eastern fringe of the greater metropolitan region of Adelaide. Along with the use of the mine site, I am investigating the possibility of using the existing train infrastructure that passes the site creating the link back to Adelaide, a city with the need for housing both the alive and the dead. Could we use the dramatic landscape of an open-cut mine as the place of memorialisation? Could we complete the same rituals in a different space? <img width="3544" height="3544" width_o="3544" height_o="3544" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/5e558796c8d618220b11ed7249dbaf16332030f32eddd12a9f2bb1abc2ce0e84/Slope.jpg" data-mid="783906" border="0" /> Within the design, sloped walkways are a key design decision. Lifts require groups to be split and stairs require concentration. Both of these issues split attention away from why someone is actually there, it also inhibits a group to be able to mourn together. Yes, the open-cut mine will be a scar on the landscape for a long time to come but this gives the opportunity to integrate the history of the industry with the idea of memorialisation. This does not mean we should just leave the surrounding barren but over time revegetate. In a group with three of my peers, we formed a project team for the 12 week design and documentation period. The success of the team relied on how efficient and cohesive the team could work together. The brief was to design and document a high-rise commercial building with spaces for; retail tenancies, car-parking, hotel, and student accommodation. Explored in this studio was the design of compact student accommodation with operable joinery within rooms allowing for more adaptive spaces for the students residing there, to minimalist hotel suites for the business traveler. This elective saw a group of twenty-four students travel to remote Northern Territory to retrofit two existing structures known as Bala Balas for the traditional owners who are the rangers of what is known as Fish River Station. Before the retrofit, the Bala Bala’s consisted of a steel structure with a raised floor and a canvas tensioned canvas roof. Rangers would set up tents on raised floor to sleep in to minimise the risk of contracting Ross River virus. <img width="6000" height="4000" width_o="6000" height_o="4000" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/0f9fe3ad76bc368d31ba13b4d7ebb1fbe2d56c66d91bf75e080f711d797ae205/Fish_River-4448.jpg" data-mid="783781" border="0" data-scale="100"/> <img width="4000" height="6000" width_o="4000" height_o="6000" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/5936e6bb9e544161d2e0c60bafe663fbcbcf5a917af3a40cc97120ccc56ceaf8/Fish_River-4391.jpg" data-mid="783769" border="0" /> Over the 12 days the group retrofitted; rafter extensions, an insulated roof/ceiling, newly sealed floor, Crimsafe walls, and joinery were added. The resulting design /structure affords the rangers a more comfortable dwelling. I, along with a small team installed the new, sealed flooring and ceiling overcoming differences in the prefabricated materials and the existing structure. The location of this site is on the Worli Peninsula in the city of Mumbai, India. Firstly proposed is a 450m long monolith urban plan sprawling into the Mahim Bay. It is a suggested solution to an increasing population density in a low-socioeconomic area. The GROUNDSCRAPER would be set up as a framework which the Koliwada people who would like to live in would construct their own module along a certain set of parameters and guidelines. These modules would slot and lock into place. This act of giving people the freedom to design and construct their own dwelling and business give them a greater sense of pride and ownership. <img width="5986" height="9032" width_o="5986" height_o="9032" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/555b005ce09452db27d1e6380830e509aba5338f2b960852dd4c45ba0156894e/Site-07.png" data-mid="784251" border="0" data-scale="55"/> The second piece of the studio was to design a civic center for the Koliwada people. For this center I&nbsp; chose to go down the path of proposing a place of education and construction. The idea behind the proposal for the larger urban plan was the majority of it would be constructed by the people wanting to live there would be carried through to this building. The building acting similar to a conveyor belt in a factory, where the groups that are wanting to reside would first learn construction methods, then design and build their own custom module that would then fit into the framework of the larger urban plan. <img width="4322" height="1706" width_o="4322" height_o="1706"
